UKULELE MOVEMENT

UM Loft officially opened on Sunday 24 July 2011 in conjunction with the open house hosted by the tenants of TURE. We are very lucky to be a part of this eclectic mix of tenants housed in a wonderful warehouse building by the Kallang River basin. Located in a serene and scenic location (just 5 minutes' drive from the CBD) such a property is hard to come by in built-up Singapore. 

It was less than a year after opening our Dunlop Street store (now known as UM Dunlop) when we were approached by the landlord to be part of this exclusive collective. We were skeptical at first but the location and space on offer was too good an opportunity to pass up. The fact that the lift opens up to the floor like a New York City loft was a BIG plus. The all-round windows with views of the Kallang River and the Kallang Park was another big draw for us, and the location of the building which is within the park itself meant we could bring the ukulele outdoors. Imagine ukulele classes or jams by the water, picnics under the coconut trees with your loved ones and an ukulele...gentle sea breeze caressing your skin, or spend a lazy afternoon at the cafe downstairs with your uke and a cuppa java. nice.

UM Loft is almost three times as big as UM Dunlop. The ability to have more classrooms meant classes can be conducted concurrently and a bigger retail space means more ukuleles can be displayed for everyone to try. We even have a performance area for monthly performances within the store. This series of performances to promote the ukulele and local artistes playing the ukulele is known as "Unplugged at UM Loft". It will be free to attend but capacity is limited. Look out for such events on our emailer or Facebook fanpage.

The official opening kicked off at 11am on Sunday, we conducted free beginner classes throughout the day, there were items on special offer just for the opening, free ukulele performances and we ended the day with a jam by the riverside at sunset. It was well attended by over 50 people and it made a very memorable ending to a crazy day. Below are pictures of the whole event.
