Construction
Look closely at the joinery, or how the instrument is put together. Ensure it is cleanly joined and properly glued together. Are binding and decorative purfling strips next to the binding neatly inlayed and glued? Check if the neck is attached correctly, or is it crooked with gaps between the neck heel and body. Check the fingerboard. Frets should be crowned, or rounded evenly, and the edges will have a somewhat rounded beveled angle. Run your fingers along the frets, they should be very smooth. Finally, sight down the fingerboard to check the evenness. The frets should appear like a railroad track. If it doesn't, it means the neck is twisted. Next better uke please.
